Criminal Record Checks
Within the childcare industry, I feel we are waiting with bated breath to see what the Government is going to do about improving the current procedures for Criminal Records checks
30/03/2011
All childcarers that register with Tinies must have an Enhanced CRB check or be in the process of getting one. However, the CRB system is totally flawed, because the moment you get a CRB it is out of date.
A person could theoretically have a clean CRB on Tuesday and be charged with an offence on Wednesday. And employers and agencies would be none the wiser.
We need an updated system
What we desperately need is a checking system which is constantly updated and accessible to employers and agencies of childcarers.
It should also only involve a one off fee to be paid by the childcarer. At the moment, childcarers often have to apply for a new CRB every year, or even have to get a new CRB for each agency they register with.
This is an expensive exercise
The Government has said that it will be making changes to the CRB system, alongside the changes it is going to make to the Vetting and Barring Scheme (which was due to launch last year, but was halted).
But it is not likely to happen for another 2 years. In my view, this is too long to wait.
