Happy New Year from Tinies

Happy New Year to all our Tinies followers. We hope you had a good Christmas and are looking forward to a positive 2013

My youngest son announced at breakfast that he was so over last year, and it's all about 2013 and turning 6! He has the right attitude.

This year should be about looking forward, and not back. It's going to be about the positive, and not the negative. That is why I'm going to take affirmative action by not making any resolutions this year, as they are only ever used by me as a rod with which to beat myself when I don't stick to them.

Making and breaking resolutions

I remember one year a friend of a friend produced an Excel spreadsheet of her resolutions, which were sub-divided and colour coded into 5 categories (Health, Financial, Spiritual, Philanthropic, General), with 10 resolutions per category. She said she would regularly review the spreadsheet during the course of the year and grade herself on how she had done. She was explaining this to me, as I quietly drank myself into a stupor, and trying to persuade me to do one. Needless to say I didn't and felt very virtuous all year, whereas she ended up in therapy.

The only change I'm going to make this year is how I communicate. Not really a resolution, more of a mindset change, which involves the following:

  1. Calling friends more than I text/email them
  2. Speaking to my husband rather than not speaking at all (I'm good at the silent treatment)
  3. Whispering rather than shouting at my kids. I really think they will listen better if they can barely hear me at all
  4. Saying good morning to people - normally I'm staring at the pavement or floor to avoid them seeing my unmade/pillow-wrinkled face. Maybe I should also remember to put make-up on too, so they don't get scared when I do look at them
  5. And lastly I may, and it is a really big may, reactivate my Facebook account to start communicating better with the world, or at least with the 5 friends I'm likely to attract.

Watch this space.
