Our Favourite Homemade Children's Birthday Cakes
Want to impress your child and your family with a homemade birthday cake this year? You don't have to be a contestant on the Great British Bake Off to be able to make these cakes
There's no reason why a homemade birthday cake shouldn't taste as good as - if not better than - a store bought one. An added bonus is that making the cake yourself can ensure that it's healthier, containing no artificial ingredients and less sugar, and a lot more to love.
As the Great British Bake Off is back on TV again this week, we've rounded up a few recipes that demonstrate how making your own child's birthday cake doesn't have to be an impossible task, and the results can be impressive.
Lego birthday cake
Lego has been a favourite toy for children and parents through generations, so why not celebrate with a Lego themed birthday cake? There's a variety of different ways to make a cake with a Lego-design, this is one of our favourites.
Digger cake
A fool-proof way to ensure your child will be happy with their cake is to use their favourite toy as inspiration. If your child has a thing for tractors, diggers, or all things with wheels, this cake, which is a lot easier to assemble than it looks, is sure to make them happy.
Butterfly cake
Sometimes all it takes to make a cake look special is to re-arrange it a little bit. This way of making a round cake into a butterfly is as creative as it's clever. Once you've positioned the pieces, you can decorate the cake any way you want.
Kit Kat cake
This cake proves that less isn't always more. It doesn't take many ingredients or any special skills to make this cake, but it looks very professional and decadent once you're done. Your children will love indulging their sweet-tooth by tucking into this one, we can attest.. a small slice is enough.
Guitar cake
Perfect for any aspiring musician, regardless of their choice of instrument. All you need is a bit of a skill with a knife, lots of frosting, and some chocolate-covered wafer cookies to create this memorable and edible instrument.
Piñata cake
What's better than a delicious surprise hidden inside an already delicious cake? Fill it up with your child's favourite treats - this cake never fails to impress, be it a family gathering or a charity cake sale.
Pirate ship cake
If your child is pirate obsessed, this is the design for you. All you'll need is a rectangular cake, some creativity, frosting in different colours, and some imaginative decorating, and the pirate ship cake is complete.
Dinosaur cake
Everyone knows at least one child who loves dinosaurs, a common phase in children's lives. You can encourage their interest with this dinosaur-themed cake - bonus points if you manage to make it look like their favourite dinosaur species.
Rainbow cake

There are several ways to incorporate a colourful rainbow theme into your child's cake - this relatively simple but still impressive cake is one of our favourites.
