Our Favourite Ways of Getting your Children into Shakespeare

Speak like Shakespeare day occurs on 23rd April to coincide with the beloved playwright's birthdate every year. Powered by the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, this day encourages everyone to speak in Shakespeare's tongue in celebration. Trying out Shakespeare's style of English can be a lot of fun, and it can also encourage your children to become more interested in the plays themselves! As such, we wrote about how you can nurture this interest and the potential benefits.

Reading itself, is incredibly important to your child's development, and Shakespeare can be a useful way to encourage the habit. There has been plenty of research proving the benefits of reading from a young age too.

It allows a child's development to progress as they start to recognise objects, sounds, shapes and colours.

Children are like sponges - they are always listening even when you think they don't understand and this is why it is important to introduce books early on
Reading is also an essential life skill. Children need to be able to read and write well in order to succeed academically; not just in English, but in all other subjects. More time spent reading for pleasure leads to stronger reading skills.

What is slightly less obvious, but proved over and over again in research such as that undertaken by The National Literacy Trust, is that children who read for pleasure are significantly more likely when they grow up to succeed professionally, own their own home, and vote in elections.
All of this is true, but remember that it won't cut much ice with many children. Ultimately, the only reason they will choose to read is that they think they're going to enjoy it. This is where Shakespeare can come in handy.

Tinies provided an impeccable and extremely professional nanny service for my 2 children. My 5 year-old daughter was full of praise for the nanny she spent the day with and I would highly recommend.
