An exciting and forward thinking nursery based in Wimbledon and Twickenham are looking for someone with proven managerial/leadership experience and a love for the outdoors. You have to enjoy being on the ground with the children, leading from the front and extremely organised to balance office time and forest time.

The nursery educate children aged from 2-5, following the core Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, incorporating learning in an outdoor environment where free play, fresh air, exposure to the natural world and physical activity are an integral part of learning.

Due to our nursery being a forest nursery, there are physical demands of this role. The
work is practical by definition and requires moderate levels of physical effort. It involves lifting and handling of training equipment, play equipment and other resources and to be involved in practical activities and physical care of learners and the physical woodland environment.

Activities are mainly out of doors and this will require walking and managing on uneven surfaces and in unpredictable weather conditions. You are required to be a role model for the staff and learners you work with, adhering to the Health & Safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to any relevant Policies about Keeping Children Safe, ongoing safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Data Protection and Confidentiality
  • Advise a member of the management team of any concerns, e.g. over children, parents, the safety of the environment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
  • Keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff that is acquired as part of the job
  • Ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times.
  • Review policies and procedures as appropriate with guidelines and communication where necessary
  • Supervise, observe, mentor and support children aged 2-5
  • Be responsible at all times for high standards of care and education
  • Effectively deliver the EYFS ensuring that the individual needs and interest of children in the setting are met (in conjunction with other team members)
  • Ensure the provision of a high quality environment to meet the needs of individual children; having an awareness of any disabilities, family cultures and medical histories
  • Support practitioners to record and track their key children's development and learning journeys, and share with parents, carers and other key adults in the child's life
  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships and communication with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring and early learning needs
  • Be responsible for and lead all site visits
  • Support children with individual special needs, including action plans and support plans as required.
  • Ensure the nursery is compliant with laws and Ofsted regulations and ensure policies for Safeguarding are adhered to
  • Prepare and share logistics with the onsite team, update and share children's attendance and registers
  • Ensure children are signed in and out on a register in the morning and evening
  • Record staff hours and ensure lockboxes are prepared each day
  • Oversee the filing and record keeping of staff, children and other regulatory documents.
  • Manage the site set-up including; carrying out a risk assessment, ensuring logistics are communicated e.g. ensuring food/snacks, activities and walk-outs are done in time
  • Manage the indoor site including: changing of waterproof clothes of children, dinner,
planning of activities as well as staff breaks and closing of the nursery are done in time
  • Maintain equipment and resources to include regular auditing of equipment for staff, children and the setting, including but not limited to first aid kits, sunscreen nappies, soap and any other items required daily
  • Manage the enrolment of new children joining the nursery
  • Arrange and advise of interview times for prospective candidates, conduct interviews onsite, print trial declaration form and obtain candidates signature. Liaise with HR on the outcome
  • Managing the on boarding process of giving out the contract and filing all documents in employee folder
  • Monitor current training and qualifications and highlight staff training needs
  • Manage regular appraisals with staff, take minutes of the appraisal and inform HR of the outcome


Qualification / Experience Required:

• Experience of working in a nursery/private day care setting as either a Room Leader or Deputy Nursery Manager or Manager
• A relevant childcare qualification for the role (Minimum NNEB, NVQ 3/Diploma 3)
• Minimum of 3 year's post qualification experience
• Preferable experience within outdoor education environment (desirable)
• Experience of undergoing Ofsted inspections with 'good' OR 'outstanding' outcomes
• Experience improving or trouble shooting within a setting to raise Ofsted outcomes
• Ability to develop robust policies and procedures to support quality childcare
• A robust knowledge of the early years foundation stage.
• An excellent knowledge of the learning and development requirements and the welfare requirement
• Ability to motivate a large team and develop on staff's existing skills
• Highly organised, structured individual, confident in using initiative
• Inspiring leader with a vision to improve children's outdoor education
• Ability to adapt quickly to changes and use a flexible approach in managing a diverse team in an outdoor setting
• Approachable and caring with a passion for working with children and the outdoors

Salary: £30,000-£35,000 depending on experience
Hours- 40 hours a week
