Job Description

  • Overview:

    As a Room Leader, you will work closely with the senior management team to deliver outstanding care and education within the nursery. You will lead and support a team, ensuring high standards are consistently maintained, while receiving ongoing training and professional development.

    Purpose of the Role:

    To lead a room effectively, ensuring high-quality childcare, strong team performance, and a safe, engaging environment for children to learn and develop.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Lead, mentor, and inspire a team to deliver high standards of care and education

    Ensure all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements are followed

    Oversee planning and delivery of activities in line with the EYFS framework

    Support a child-centred approach to learning, ensuring all children’s needs are met

    Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and external professionals

    Promote and maintain a strong health & safety culture

    Take on safeguarding responsibilities, including acting as Designated Safeguarding Lead when required

    Support staff development through coaching, mentoring, and training

    Contribute to staff planning, rota management, and team development

    Assist with day-to-day nursery operations, including hygiene standards and room setup

    Build positive relationships with families and support occupancy growth

    Key Duties:

    Lead and manage the room team, ensuring high performance and engagement

    Support staff supervision, development, and performance management

    Ensure safe staffing levels and effective deployment of staff

    Deliver high-quality early years practice, including for children with additional needs

    Carry out observations, assessments, and planning for children’s development

    Maintain accurate records and track children’s progress

    Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed at all times

    Support mealtimes, daily routines, and general nursery duties

    Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities

    Essential Experience:

    Previous experience in an early years setting, including leadership responsibilities

    Strong knowledge of safeguarding and child protection

    Experience supporting and leading a team

    Good communication, organisation, and leadership skills

    Experience with observations, planning, and record keeping

    Paediatric First Aid (12 hours)

    Desirable Experience:

    Experience coaching or mentoring staff

    Knowledge of regulatory requirements and inspection processes

    Experience with staff rota planning and nursery systems

    Qualifications:

    Level 3 Early Years qualification (essential)

    Paediatric First Aid (essential)

    Safeguarding/Child Protection training (essential)

    Food Hygiene (or willingness to obtain)

    Evidence of ongoing professional development

    Relevant higher qualification in Early Years (desirable)

    Excellent communication (written and verbal)
